Research in V&A Museum

IMG_8980.jpg

Here are some toys of model kitchens and cookers. Some of the cooker are tiny but delicacy. Some of the toys has a long history and were collected in different culture circles. But they are highly similar. Maybe that means wherever they are, always some of the children like house playing. So that in different history and in different culture, there always have the requirements on model houses, kitchen and cooker. Because children like through playing them, to feeling of playing host to friends. As we can see, it’s a traditional games for children no matter when and no matter where they are.

The second part of the host playing, I highly chose the children tea time on the secondary research for Food and Drink. Just I wrote on my primary research, children like host playing no matter where and when they are. My secondary research was further prove my opinion. We can see there are five different styles of tea pot from the earliest 1889 to the latest 1988. Some are made of ceramic or silver and some are plastic. Some are in Europe or English Country and some are collected in East Asia.

Four Items Research

Pencils create marks by physical abrasion, leaving behind a trail of solid core material that adheres to a sheet of paper or other surface. They are distinct from pens, which instead disperse a trail of liquid or gel ink that stains the light color of the paper by absorption.

The word candle comes from Middle English candel, from Old English and from Anglo-Norman candele, both from Latin candēla, from candēre, to shine.A candle is an ignitable wick embedded in wax or another flammable solid substance such as tallow that provides light, and in some cases, a fragrance. It can also be used to provide heat, or used as a method of keeping time.

A crayon (or wax pastel) is a stick of colored wax, charcoal, chalk or other material used for writing or drawing. A crayon made of pigment with a dry binder is a pastel; when made of oiled chalk it is called an oil pastel. A grease pencil or Chinese marker (UK chinagraph pencil) is made of colored hardened grease. There are also watercolor crayons, sometimes called water-soluble crayons.

Garlic is a species in the onion genus, Allium. Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion. With a history of several thousand years of human consumption and use, garlic is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran, and has long been a common seasoning worldwide. It was known to Ancient Egyptians, and has been used both as a food flavoring and as a traditional medicine.

I choose them because I think they are necessary for daily life. Pencils are useful tools on drawing. Candles are traditional light in human history and can switch the atmosphere now. Wax Crayons are the basic tools on drawing. And garlic are one kind of flavor which are frequently used. They are high-frequently used but sometimes we would easily ignore them. Also because of they are high-frequently used, they would have a lot of vessels to contain them. So they would be lots of research to make.

Research of John McQueen

I referenced this artist because I like the work which gives me some natural feeling, he made the clearly shapes, a cuboid, a column and even though a human body, but they are twisting in a method which are not in order. We can see all of the strips, they are twisted  different ways.

In my common mind, basket has several way to twist, but they gives me more ideas of twist, it’s no logical, break the orders and more of freestyle. That's why I think they are great.

Class Research

IMG_9033.jpgIMG_9032.jpg

This toy is Tummy Ache. It’s an educational toys because it can teach children through playing the game. It’s for minimum two people to maximum four people. It’s card games actually. It has dish cards, drink cards and dessert cards inside. Children need to choose card for meal in the game. Also there are some wrong card choices because some of the cards drawn bugs on it. When children choose them, parents can teach them that would cause tummy ache so that let children know what can eat and what can not eat.

From the material, the cards are made of paper card, the edges are round to prevent children from cutting by themselves. The pictures are drown funny and has bright color to attract them. The cards has several choices to teach kids keep balance on eating.

Above of all, it a interesting toy for teaching children to judge what can eat, or let the children play together for social.

Two Toys in Hamleys

IMG_9020.jpgIMG_9021.jpg

In Hamleys, I chose two toys for research. Actually they are in a series. Also there are other toys in same series but I didn’t upload. They just are example for the all-age-host-playing.

Observing these two toys, the minimum age for children is three. Also, through their bright color, children-friendly materials, and safety edge, we will know these are made for young kids or babies.

These toys are quietly different between in V&A Museum. They are more friendly for children, safer and harder to break. In addition, they have motors inside. Actually they can not stir or boil real liquid because that’s dangerous. But that’s enough for children to satisfied their host game.

4 types of pencil tools

2017-12-21 14.46.49.png

This family of desk objects is made up of individual, but compatible, objects that each fulfill a specific task:

A tall Pencil Pot to hold all writing ephemera; a Sharpener Pot (with motif handle) that neatly collects your shavings; a Tape Dispenser with utilitarian brass serrated arm and, lastly, a small container; Eraser Pot, for all your loose bits, with a particularly handy lid in the form of a large eraser. Like all Another Country objects, the Desktop series is especially functional whilst also possessing a timeless charm.

Pencil Label

A pencil is a writing implement or art medium constructed of a narrow, solid pigment core inside a protective casing which prevents the core from being broken and/or from leaving marks on the user’s hand during use. ( Wikipedia)

My Thought

Pencil has a long history in the world. And now developed a lot of types and colors. Some are soft and easy to broken but some are hard. Some are dark-marking and some are light. (others I wrote in the picture)
There also a several types of vessels to hold or carry pencils. Put it in the backpack, pencil case or pencil bags to carry on. And use caps, pencil holders to protect them from being broken. Some vessels have so many functions also could hold other writing tools such as pen and brush. Some are only hold for pencils.
I choose it because I think pencils is one of the most creative tools to draw. It is easy to write that just need a piece of paper. It can change the size of the thickness by pencil sharpener. It is also easy to redo by eraser.

This collection of concrete stationery by Chinese studio Umn Design is based on the geometric shapes made by folding paper.

The V-pleats collection includes a bookend, a tape dispenser, a storage tray and a set of pen-holders, all of which reference the pointed shapes created by folding paper.

The collection references forms created by pleated paper, including the V-tapeholder shaped like a pair of triangles

The V-vase containers come in a set of four, each a different height, and feature arrow-shaped openings that allow them to slot into one another.

The V-tapeholder comprises a pair of triangles. The roll of tape is held at the centre of the smaller shape, and attaches to a taller triangle that is used to tear off sections of tape.

Four V-vase containers for storing pens can be slotted together in a line

The triangular forms are repeated in the bookends, which also feature a zigzagging surface that gives owners room to store pens and pencils.

Bookends with ridged faces can also hold pencils

Taiwanese designer Yen-Wen Tseng also used the material for a range of bright blue stationery, which was made using cylindrical forms. London designer Magnus Petterson also used concrete to create a set of hand-cast desk accessories including a pen pot and tape dispenser.

Other stationery ranges launched recently include wooden accessories based on Russian architectural landmarks, a set of alternative pencil designs, and a collection made from volcanic rock.

Knatter, Klorian Berger and Claudia Muller 2009

In the process of researching about food and drink for child, I was attached by this series of products. It’s a simply design which is used for parents to feed children. Because sometimes children are naughty and refuse to eat. This product which combining spoons with wooden toys could catch children’s eyes so that easy to be fed.

From this products I have learnt that when we design something. We should consider about how to attract the people group whom we are designing for. For example, to let children feel interested, the spoons are designed like a toy because children love toys.

If I design product for children again, I would consider more on how to catch children’s eyes.

In addition, I think the designing of toy spoon are flexible and sustainable because the designers can produce different verifies of categories not only making the toy cars and planes but also can make such as toy animals and some lovely-designing food.

There is only one problems I think it is  hard to handle because of the large size. But I still think it’s a good design

Texture Research

I made a research of different materials. I chose those two pictures because they were clearly shown the texture of the surfaces whatever organic or inorganic materials, transparent, translucent, or non-transparent, I think its useful for me when I need to have reference on materials quickly. Also when I need to draw the materials, I can noticed some of the features from observing them.

Vessel Research

Handcrafted Ceramics thatll make you crack a smile is a ceramics studio with a biting wit. It has a unique design and it has a interesting function which has interstices to hold glasses to like a funny face.

Vintage handmade ceramic has a natural color. The nonuniform distribution of the color make it seems like sky or galaxy. So beautiful the color is.

The third vessel use African mud cloth, using a traditional shapes and with a circles and scripts decorated inside. The whole body use brown leather scripts, weaving to combine them.

The last vessel is made by plaster. Using dense regular scripts to make the moving feeling. Its actually not for pencils because of its large size. But I like its texture.

Knowledge of Ceramics

Ceramics are classified as inorganic and nonmetallic materials that are essential to our daily lifestyle.  Ceramic and materials engineers are the people who design the processes in which these products can be made, create new types of ceramic products, and find different uses for ceramic products in everyday life.

Ceramics are all around us.  This category of materials includes things like tile, bricks, plates, glass, and toilets.  Ceramics can be found in products like watches (quartz tuning forks-the time keeping devices in watches), snow skies (piezoelectric-ceramics that stress when a voltage is applied to them), automobiles (sparkplugs and ceramic engine parts found in racecars), and phone lines.  They can also be found on space shuttles, appliances (enamel coatings), and airplanes (nose cones).  Depending on their method of formation, ceramics can be dense or lightweight.  Typically, they will demonstrate excellent strength and hardness properties; however, they are often brittle in nature.

Ceramics can also be formed to serve as electrically conductive materials, objects allowing electricity to pass through their mass, or insulators, materials preventing the flow of electricity.  Some ceramics, like superconductors, also display magnetic properties.

Ceramics are generally made by taking mixtures of clay, earthen elements, powders, and water and shaping them into desired forms.  Once the ceramic has been shaped, it is fired in a high temperature oven known as a kiln.  Often, ceramics are covered in decorative, waterproof, paint-like substances known as glazes.
